Experience A Memorable Vacation In Stunning Crete

By Andreas Pantelidis

The Greek island of Crete is one of the most unique places in the world. It has a very hospitable location, landscapes that blend together in an unlikely cohesion, a history as Europe's first recorded civilization, and an architectural and artistic legacy that played a huge part in influencing other cultures during the Bronze Age. A vacation in this wondrous place will be an experience not soon forgotten.

As soon as one reaches the island, they can easily sense that Crete is unlike anyplace else. It can be felt in the way the local people speak and open their arms to warmly invite visitors to get the real Cretan experience which includes immersion in social activities, music, and tasting the cuisine. The untamed beauty that covers the land is awesome - from the wild foliage, wonderful olive tree groves, tall cliffs, rocks and beaches, and the way in which the sunshine reflects like crystals on the water and sand.

Four prefectures with various appeals, charms, and histories, make up the island. Those seeking a more modern and cosmopolitan adventure will appreciate the development and upscale resorts and larger cities in the north edge that is closer to Europe. Anyone wanting to see the land in a traditional and unspoiled way may prefer the south side facing Africa. Exploring them both results in a truly amazing holiday.

As the fabled land of King Minos, many mysteries and wonders surround the intricate caves and many ruins of Crete. Multiple occupiers and invaders such as the Byzantine, Venetians, Romans, Arabs, and Ottoman pashas, have torn through here over time, leaving villages and towns marked forever. This provides many touring opportunities.

There is so much to explore with more than 400 centuries of history. Some of the things many people like to do are visit the folkway museums, the battlements that remain of the Venetian Fortezza, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, and the ruins left by the Roman-Byzantine era, or to peruse the palazzos and narrow walkways in the traditional quarters, hike mountain trails, or enjoy the beaches. Experiencing real Cretan lifestyle is also an option.

Finding the best accommodation in Crete is easiest in April and May, which is just prior to the high season, and right after the resorts reopen from the winter lull. During June through September, without advance reservations it can be quite difficult to find rooms in Chania, as well as the other prefectures due to tourist overflow.

For lighter crowds, better prices on accommodations, and weather that is more gentle, may want to consider visiting during the time frame of September and October. This incredible Grecian island is the perfect holiday destination filled with charm, history, tradition, and uniqueness.
